CCS has been coordinating the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program (SSP) since April 2020, an Ontario-based program that provides pro bono legal support to assist individuals and groups seeking to privately sponsor refugees with the application process.
Program Helps Refugee Sponsors
We are excited to inform you that we are hosting a free virtual event on Wednesday, October 14th, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. to celebrate the program re-launch and you are cordially invited.
Panel Discussion on COVID-19 & Refugee Crisis
The event will feature a conversation focused on COVID-19 and its implications for the global refugee crisis. The panel will explore the pandemic’s impact on various levels of government, sponsors, community organizations, and, of course, sponsored-newcomers around the world. The discussion will also highlight the important role that pro bono lawyers can play to support refugees and their sponsors, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Locked Down & Left Behind
Our panel has enormous collective expertise with respect to refugee protection, sponsorship, and re-settlement, and we are excited to have them share their insights.
- Jennifer Bond, law professor, founder and managing director of the University of Ottawa Refugee Hub, and chair of the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative.
- Michael Casasola, a senior resettlement officer at UNHCR Canada (the UN refugee agency), who has extensive experience in refugee settlement and the sponsorship sector.
- Petra Molnar, a lawyer and researcher and associate director of the Refugee Law Lab at York University.
